More Information

Region description

The historic town of Grein on the Danube is the main town of the Strudengau region. It was elevated to the status of a town in 1491, making it the third oldest town in the Mühlviertel region. Widely known in the Middle Ages as the "little golden town", Grein today enchants with its nostalgic charm. Witnesses of the fabulous cultural life of the city from the past to the present are the unique Greinburg Castle with the Maritime Museum and the famous Municipal Theater with attached Municipal Museum. A series of high-profile event cycles round out the cultural offerings. A look behind the scenes of this very special Danube city is worthwhile.

The ancient cultural landscape of the Strudengau is characterized by the Danube incision with the steep cliffs of the Danube valley, which is very narrow here. Hiking trails with brilliant views of the Danube valley and the Alps in the south, power spots like the Marienstein, Mondstein or Frauenstein, deep gorges, towering rock faces and last but not least the untouched nature still inspire many visitors from near and far.

Today Grein lies on the Danube Cycle Path, the Danube Trail, the Road of Emperors and Kings, the Road of Historic Theaters and the Castles and Palaces Trail.
